What’s your favourite writing place?
My ideal writing place would be by a window that provides a picturesque view of a river flowing outside, its waves gently lapping the pebbled banks.
Or, maybe a lush garden, with a stream flowing through it, offering the soft background music of the falling water.
My real life writing place, though, is far removed from this romantic image.
It is my dining table. Earlier, it was the couch, but after my back started grumbling about the awkward, unfriendly posture I would adopt when I sat down to write, I moved to the dining table and chair.
The height of the table made it uncomfortable, so I placed a pillow on the chair for some elevation and now it’s better. Better suited to my back, which couldn’t have been more happy, or relieved.
A born daydreamer, I often go away on these fantasy trips, where I envision myself sitting in a cozy room at the top of my house; a cute, wooden desk with its many drawers holding my paraphernalia; a window above the desk offering me scenic views of the world outside, inspiring me to write the magical essay that strikes a chord with the reader, or create a painting that sweeps the onlooker off his feet.
Ah, bliss! Just thinking about it makes me swoon and wish my dreams come true and some day I find myself actually sitting by such a window, writing that dream essay or creating that stunning artwork.
It’s such a blessing, isn’t it, to be able to paint such vivid images in our mind?
Imagination is such a thing, you are lucky if you can use it to give you company during your lonely, difficult, unhappy moments. Use it, to steal you away from that place of unhappiness to one where you come alive. Use it, to create friends when you have none just when you need one. Use it, to make the world a better place when it’s dark and scary all around.
If you were to ask me what’s the one thing I wouldn’t be able to live without, I’d say it’s my imagination. It helps me survive life. It helps me find peace within when I need it the most. It helps me see the rainbow amidst the grey. It keeps me going.

I am late in writing this #SoulfulSunday post. Maybe I could call it the ‘day-after-the SoulfulSunday-post’! 🙂
In my ideal writing corner dream, a nice sturdy and roomy desk features as the prominent character. It would be placed against a wall with a big nice window where I can gaze at the sky or watch the people go by at a distance or spy on the figures moving about on the opposite window presenting me with all sorts of stories to write about. I wouldn’t say no at all if this window happens to be on a penthouse! Oh dear, look what you did, Shilpa! I’m drooling over my imaginary penthouse window on this Monday morning!
So happy to read your day after the soulful Sunday post. 😄 Your post definitely took me away somewhere! ❤️❤️

Your imagination works so beautifully too – I see it in your writing and your art. The power of imagination is a gift that we humans take for granted!

I totally hear you, Shilpa!! So glad you took the time out to write this soulful post today. The power of imagination lifts us from our mundane planes to another much higher and liberating! If it weren’t for that would we survive the drudgery of everyday living? I can totally and absolutely relate to the last 3 lines of your post.

Esha, sometime back, I read this quote: A little bit of fiction is necessary for us to get through life.
So true, na?

Haha! We all would love such romantic places to write, na? ;P
I, too, make do with the dining table from where I can’t see anything but three walls and the main door. Sigh.

Yes, the writer’s block was worrisome, so I am glad I could come up with this post and beat the block! ;D

I sometimes wish I could just think the words onto the page, and then my “ideal writing place” would be wherever I wish to be at the time. 🙂 I remember where I was when I first discovered a real LOVE of writing, though. I was sitting in the woods, on an old log, in the fall – it was cold, and I was with my dog. She sad patiently by me, in the leaves, while I wrote in a notebook. I was in 5th grade, I think. 5th, 6th, or 7th – I know that for certain.

The first time you wrote, you were in the woods, with your dog! Awww…that’s perfect! My dog would accompany me too when I sat down to write. I think an ideal writing place would be ideal only if our pets are present. Right? ❤

Well… nature. It is many dog-lifetimes ago that my dog was with me, there in the woods by the lake. I since married a man who basically said, “It’s pets or me, not both!” some 36+ years ago, and I chose wisely and well. So…nature. Next sunny, half-warm day, I should take my journal and a pen outside, go to the park, and sit by the lake (there are two choices within a couple of miles, and I usually just go there for a walk, but maybe I should try writing there).
